Leaders and stakeholders of Isoko ethnic nationality in Delta state, will on Friday gather at Isoko Development Union IDU, Secretariat, Oleh, Headquarters of Isoko South local government area for the Isoko Environmental summit.
The summit set to be organized by Isoko Environmental Monitoring Committee (IEMC),Isoko Peoples Environmental Assembly (IPEA) will launch of the State of Isoko Environment report at the event.
A statement signed by Mr Maimoni Ubrei-Joe, and Mrs. Praise Okiroro-Otuaga, Chairman and Secretary of the Isoko Environmental Monitoring Committee (IEMC), disclosed that the event is aimed to show insight on the environmental challenges facing the Isoko nation and outline a sustainable environmental practices in the Isoko region.
With the summit, IEMC will apply an investigative approach adopted by the committee in assessing the state of the Isoko environment and the responsibility for a safe environment should not be left to the government alone.
The Isoko people as one of the smallest ethnic groups in the Niger Delta region and they are endowed with significant oil and gas reserves and their predominant livelihood are centered on persistent farming of cassava, groundnut, maize, okra, and yams.
“The Isoko Environmental Monitoring Committee will present its recommendations in the form of the Isoko People’s Environmental Manifesto to policymakers.
“IEMC was established in 2021, and it will employed a participatory research approach on the cases of oil and gas pollution, sand dredging, deforestation, coastal erosion, and flooding incidents.” the statement reads.
