Tragedy struck on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Ugbenu, Koko junction in Delta state as five persons lost their lives in an explosion involving a fuel laden tanker that fell along the Benin-Warri road while scooping fuel.
The tragic incident occured when the tanker laden with PMS driving towards Benin fell down at the Koko junction in Ugbenu town fuel with its content spilling into a nearby swamp.
This was said to have attracted community youths who took advantage of the fallen tanker to scoops fuel into jerry cans and other containers.
It was while doing this that an explosion erupted and the fire engulfed the whole area burning five persons amongst the youths.
The fallen tanker, Eight buses of different makes, Two Tankers, Five Trailers, Two Motorcycles, One Siena mini bus and one ‘C’ Class Mercedes Benz car were also razed during the inferno.
Corpses of those that lost their lives were evacuated to the General hospital mortuary at Oghara.
Meanwhile, operatives of the Delta state Police command in collaboration with officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission {FRSC} are making efforts to ensure a free flow of traffic in thee area.
While commiserating with the family of victims of the unfortunate incident, the Delta State Police Commissioner, CP Wale Abass expressed his displeasure with the attitudes of some Nigerians especially the youths.
He said; “it is sad that people don’t learn from past occurrences”. This is not the first time such incident will happen, yet people still struggle to scoop fuel that is highly inflammable. He appealed to Nigerians to avoid such scenes where such occurrences of oil spill as it poses a serious threat to lives and and properties.
The CP also appreciated the officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for working hand in hand with the Command in assuring convenience to all road users in Delta state
