Residents, traders of Igbudu community in Warri South Local Government Area on Tuesday, February 14, witness a violent protest carried out by angry youths of the peaceful community protesting the killing of an indigene, one Mr. Ejiro Ayiwe by a vigilante group.
The incident saw the vehicle of the community’s vigilante’s chairman set ablaze and other properties destroyed by the irate youths.
The irate youths alleged that the vigilante of the community took the deceased to the community’s town hall “Ogwa” on Monday, February 13, for an undisclosed reasons, but allegedly tortured him which led to his death.
In an interview with the immediate past Community’s President, Chief Ovu Oyiboaga, he described the action as ‘unfortunate” appealing to the aggrieved youths to sheath their swords while efforts are on by security agencies to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.
Chief Oyiboaga however lauded the effort of Nigerian Police for prompt response in maintaining law and order.
On his part, the President of Industrial Parts Dealers Association, Mr. Gift Onotafe expressed shock over the calamity suffered by the community and his members running into millions of naira.
While extending his condolences to the bereaved family, he thanked security agencies for their swift response and admonished his members to be vigilant.
Efforts to reach members of the vigilante were abortive, but the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident but promised that the situation is under control.
