The Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, held her maiden/inaugural plenary with a charge by the speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor to legislators to be serious and prepared for legislative duties even as he assured that the 8th Assembly will prioritize the well-being of Deltans.
Addressing members of the House, Rt Hon Guwor urged all to strive towards achieving the set goals of the present administration irrespective of political party affiliations.
The Presiding Officer, while welcoming members back to legislative business after the inauguration of the 8th Assembly on 13th June, 2023, congratulated them on their successful swearing-in.
Guwor, who emphasized the readiness of the Assembly to hit the ground running, said members had been equipped with fundamental skills in legislative practice and procedures.
He reminded the Legislators that as representatives of the people, they should prioritize the security and welfare of constituents in the discharge of their legislative duties.
The Speaker enjoined the Assembly members to work as a team to engender good governance in the state, saying that in all things, they should put the people first.
Rt Hon Guwor acknowledged the independence as a Legislature but stressed that the House would collaborate with the Executive arm of Government in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.
He explained that the Legislature and the Executive were trustees of the people, saying that they had to synergise in the overall interest of Deltans.
“Let me once again congratulate all of us for a successful inauguration. I thank God Almighty for His blessings and mercies upon our lives. Distinguished colleagues, I do hope you had some rest during the short break after inauguration.
“In my acceptance speech, I promised that the House will hit the ground running. By the special grace of God, we have been equipped with fundamental skills in legislative practice and procedures at the workshop we attended in Ikot Ekpene”, Guwor stated.
Continuing he said “as representatives of the people, we will prioritize the security and welfare of our constituents in our legislative duties. I enjoin all of us to work as a team irrespective of party affiliations to enthrone good governance in the state. In all things, we should put the people first.
“I wish to also remind us that one tree cannot make a forest. While maintaining our independence as a House, we need to collaborate with the Executive arm of Government in delivering dividends of democracy to our people. We in the Legislature and the Executive are but only trustees of the people. Therefore, we have to synergise in the interest of the people”.
Meanwhile, the House has approved a N40bn Zenith Bank facility requested by the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.
The money is to be routed through the Association of Local Governments (ALGON) Delta State chapter, to the 25 Local Government Councils in the state for the settlement of outstanding entitlements of local government retirees.
