The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, on Tuesday, October 10, during a press briefing restated the commands commitment towards achieving the Inspector General of Police goal of stamping out violent crimes from the society.
Mr. Abass also disclosed that the command under his watch has since keyed into the vision and mission of the Inspector General of Police in ridden the state free of crime and ensuring the safety of residents and properties.
While stating some of the exploits made by the command, the security boss said; “My first major shake-up in the Command was the redeployment of the then DPO Ovwain/Aladja to Ekpan owing to the volatile nature of that area.
“You will agree with me that Ekpan which used to be a troubled area is now very safe and residents can now go about their lawful businesses”.
Recounting some actions and strategies implored by the command in fighting crimes, the Commissioner stated that; ” In the month of September 2023, I directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations to embark on an on-the-spot assessment of the Jesse Road where kidnapping was gradually becoming the order of the day, and consequently, security strategies were reviewed culminating in the deployment of DOPS Buffalo team, tactical teams and the Command’s Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad to the area”.
He said the strategy however paid out as within few days of its enforcement, some suspected kidnappers were arrested while a good number of assault rifles were recovered.
The Police Commissioner gave the below summary as achievements of the command in numerical statistics, disclosing that a total number 13 kidnappers, 7 armed robbers, 72 cultists were arrested and 54 firearms recovered.
He further revealed that during the period under review begining from June 2023 till date, the command has also rescued 9 kidnapped victims, recovered 286 ammunition and 195 cartridges.
CP Wale Abass who was so thankful to the state government for its unwavering support to the command, also appreciated the various sister security agencies for their continuous collaboration with the Command as well as residents for their continued support to the Command by providing the force with credible and useful information.
The CP during the briefing also frowned at jungle justice and warned all youths to desist from such as it is barbaric.
He adds that, jungle justice infringes on the fundamental human rights of the victims and in cases of jungle justices, victims of self-help are attacked based on frivolous allegations without being allowed access to fair hearing. He said the Command will no longer tolerate such human right abuse, as anyone who engages in such practice will be identified, fished out and dealt with in accordance with the law.
