The State House of Assembly Committee on Health, has assured management of Delta State College of Health Technology, Ufuoma-Ughelli of its commitment to address critical issues affecting academic activities in the institution.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon Ferguson Onwo gave the assurance when he led members on an oversight legislative duty to the Institution at Ufuoma-Ughelli, in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
Onwo who represents Isoko South two Constituency in the House, said of great concern are issues of land encroachment, epileptic power supply to the College and abandonment of projects critical to effective teaching and learning in the institution, including the 500 sitting capacity auditorium and hall for the ICT department.
The Lawmaker stated that fencing of the school premises would wade off further encroachment of the College land space, even as he stressed the urgency of restoring power supply to the institution as well as completion of the Auditorium and other abandoned building projects, most of which were being handled by Desopadec.
Hon Onwo expressed concern that the College has been facing thirty two years of no electricity, saying that no academic institution can make progress in such an environment as some of the facilities can only function with light.
The Lawmaker promised that the Committee will reach out to the State Ministry of Energy and BEDC to seek way forward.
He warned those encroaching on the school land to retrace their steps or face the law, adding that the committee would seek the assistance of the Ministry of Land to recover portions already encroached.
Onwo also promised the Committee’s preparedness to reach out to Desopadec to ascertain what must have caused the abandonment its projects in the School and see how it can return to site to complete the projects.
He appealed to the firm handling the 500 capacity auditorium to speed up the completion of the project to enhance learning in the College, pointing out the unique place of education in the MORE agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration
The Lawmaker commended staff, management and students of the institution for their commitment for excellence, despite the challenges
The Provost of the Delta State College of Health Technology Ufuoma Ughelli, Dr Augustina Erah said the institution was very delighted to receive the Committee, being the first of such visit in the history of the College.
Dr Erah who took the Lawmakers on guided tour of facilities in the College, appealed to the committee to help address challenges facing the School to promote efficiency and productivity in the institution.
Dr Erah also stressed the need for interested individuals and corporate bodies to collaborate with the school to build hostels accommodation and printing press amongst others to address the challenges in those areas.
