Former Delta State NUJ State Chairman and Executive Assistant, Media to the Delta State, Governor Comrade Norbert Chiazor has emphasized the need ethical journalism with high premium.
Chiazor handed this down when he appears as guest speaker at the Indigenous Correspondents Chapel ICC, MIRROR platform in Asaba.
The communication scholar stated that ethical standards and professionalism are the components that differentiates a journalist from a social media micro blogger and in extension places a premium on the job but not tokenism.
Commending the leaders and members of ICC for their unwavering support and dedication to grassroots reporting and development, Mr. Chiazor stressed that the indispensable nature of journalists in bringing stories from grassroots to the forefront is essential as without them many stories would remain untold.
The erudite speaker further affirmed the efficacy of journalists, adding that there is no way on can be delist them in the sustainable growth of the state, and called on the league of professionals in the pen game to play a pivotal role in advocating for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E agenda, which he said was aimed at enhancing the development of Delta State.
He called on journalists to leverage on social media platforms at combating the spread of fake news and unbalanced reportage. He also advised them to constantly run background checks, fact check critiques before bringing them to the spotlight as some or more of these critiques are of personal interest and not the collective good of all as preached.
He charged journalists to continue supporting the Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E agenda as the Governor is very much passionate about journalists and their work, promising that their work would not be in vain.
Addressing recent financial disbursements by the government, Chiazor clarified the release of 40 billion Naira for retirees’ payments and the approval of 5 billion Naira for civil servants’ promotion arrears.
He also commended Governor Oborevwori for prioritizing the completion of projects initiated by previous administrations, affirming the government’s commitment to infrastructure development.
Additionally, Chiazor revealed plans for a journalist training program proposed to the governor’s office, which is aimed at enhancing journalistic skills and professionalism in the state. He announced the initiation of an award of excellence geared at recognizing and rewarding &hardworking journalists for their contributions to society.
