Mr. Malcolm Esumei who is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital alleged that the female Medical Practitioner on duty on the day of the incident has asked him to go to a private hospital if he needs a referral letter as government hospital cannot give a referral letter to a private hospital.
Recall that Mr. Malcolm Esumei 41, a father of three was allegedly assaulted by a team of police officers attached to Ughelli Area Command led by one ASP Jeremiah at about 6:00pm on October 28, 2024, while returning from where he went to supply tiles.
Though the Ughelli Area Commander ACP Ademola Adebayo had earlier defaulted the team and issued the officers a query, but the victim is left to his fate.
According to him, “After the police had released me with the pains, I went to Central Hospital Ughelli and on getting there, I narrated what happened to the female Doctor on duty who then instructed me to go and get a card before treatment.
“In pain I went for the card and documentation and when I came back I saw same police that brutalized me having discussions with the doctor and immediately they saw me they left the Accident and Emergency, A/E Unit.
“I met the Doctor, who later told me that the injury on my eye was not serious and she prescribed drugs for me, on getting to the Pharmacy at the hospital, I was given Paracetamol tablets.
“I went back to inform her of the development, she told me that the injury was not serious and it is only Paracetamol that she can prescribe.
“I then asked her to give me a referral note as the pains were becoming unbearable, as I was not given proper medical attention, she replied and said, we don’t give referral here but I can get from another hospital If i want to be referred.
When contacted on phone call, the Zonal Medical Director said, “I will have to get more details so I can find out what exactly happened but if it is the eye, we have ophthalmologist in the hospital and under that circumstance, we don’t have to refer and we at government hospital do not refer to private but also government hospital.
“I can’t tell you categorically, I don’t know the circumstances that occurred but I will find out what happened, look at the register and talk to the Doctors and Nurses that were there to get the details in a way of handling it.”
As at the time of filing this report, the victim is still at an undisclosed hospital battling to save his eyes.
