A pregnant woman has been reportedly attacked and killed by a wild hippopotamus in Makurdi, Benue state capital.
According to reports, the pregnant woman was attacked at old bridge crossing point of River Benue on Tuesday.
Credible source revealed that the woman had gone to the island with other traders to buy vegetables for sale in the market when she was attacked at the river shore.
A witness said the woman was being ferried in an engine boat which developed a fault and later transferred to a wooden boat.
“The hippopotamus attacked the wooden boat and broke it into pieces while the woman drowned in the river.
“Local swimmers were organized to search for her body and was recovered on Wednesday,” the witness said.
The Benue Police Command spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene,
has not issued a statement on the incident.
