Scores of traders at the Ekeoyibo market in Amawbia, Awka South local government area of Anambra State may have lost their life following a two-storey building collapsed on Thursday, July 4, 2024, afternoon.
The building, according to sources, is housing traders and shop owners suddenly and it suddenly caved in at about noon.
An eyewitness confirmed that the collapsed building buried several traders beneath the debris, while two persons were already confirmed rescued and taken to the Amawbia Maternity Home for urgent medical attention, as many were still trapped.
Rescue operation was ongoing searching for survivors as at the time of this report.
Spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that two victims have been rescued so far.
According to him, the command received a n distress call at about 12:40 pm of a building collapse at Ekeoyibo market, Amawbia, and Police Operatives have rescued two victims and taken them to the hospital for medical care.
“On the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led operatives at the scene for on-the-spot assessment, the area has been cordoned off and rescue operations are still ongoing”, he stated.
